A genuine USPS Forever stamped envelope already includes postage, so it does not need an additional stamp for an eligible standard one-ounce domestic First-Class Mail letter. Add postage only when the finished mailpiece is heavier, falls into another size or shape category, requires a surcharge, goes internationally or uses an added service.

First Confirm It Is a Stamped Envelope

A USPS stamped envelope has a printed postal indicium in the upper-right corner. A Forever stamped envelope identifies that permanent postage value as part of the envelope. A flag, decorative image or stationery design without a valid postal indicium is not prepaid postage.

What you have Is base postage already included? Next step

Fixed-denomination stamped envelope Only the printed amount Compare that value with current required postage
Plain or decorative envelope No Add the required adhesive or printed postage
Prepaid business reply envelope Different payment arrangement Follow the printed mailing instructions

When No Extra Stamp Is Needed

The embedded Forever postage is enough when the completed envelope qualifies as a standard domestic First-Class Mail letter at one ounce or less and does not trigger another charge. Seal, weigh and measure the envelope after inserting the contents.

When You Need Extra Postage

  • More than one ounce: pay the applicable additional-ounce amount.
  • Square, rigid or nonmachinable: a surcharge may apply.
  • Large envelope or package: the item may fall into a different mail category.
  • International destination: domestic Forever stamped-envelope value alone does not cover the international rate.
  • Extra service: tracking, certification, insurance or another service may add charges and preparation rules.

You may add adhesive stamps to make up a legitimate postage shortfall. Do not cover the printed indicium, address, return address or barcode clear zone.

Forever Value vs. Envelope Purchase Price

The price paid for a stamped envelope can include both the postal value and the physical envelope. “Forever” describes how the embedded postage value tracks its eligible First-Class Mail category; it does not mean the entire retail purchase price becomes postage.

A Quick Mailing Check

  1. Look for a genuine printed postal indicium in the upper-right corner.
  2. Confirm that it is marked as a Forever stamped envelope rather than a fixed amount.
  3. Insert the contents, seal the envelope and check its final weight and dimensions.
  4. Identify square, rigid, bulky or international characteristics.
  5. Add only the postage or service fee that remains due.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Forever USA envelopes need stamps?

Not for an eligible standard one-ounce domestic First-Class Mail letter when the envelope has genuine Forever postage printed on it.

Can I put an extra Forever stamp on a stamped envelope?

Yes when more postage is required, but first calculate the shortfall to avoid unnecessary overpayment.

Does a picture in the corner mean the envelope is prepaid?

No. It must be a valid postal indicium, not merely decorative printing.

Does Forever mean every mailing service is included?

No. The permanent value applies to the stated mail category; other weights, shapes, destinations and services can cost more.
