Definition: A USPS Forever stamp is a postage stamp without a printed dollar denomination whose value follows a specified postal rate. An ordinary domestic Forever stamp is always worth the current First-Class Mail 1-ounce letter rate, no matter when it was purchased.
What “USA Forever” means on a stamp
USA identifies it as United States postage. Forever means an unused genuine stamp does not lose its rate-based postage value when the corresponding postal rate increases. It does not mean one stamp can mail every envelope, package or international item.
USPS introduced the first Forever stamp on April 12, 2007. The idea was to let customers keep using stamps bought before a price increase without adding makeup postage to an otherwise eligible 1-ounce domestic letter.
What an ordinary Forever stamp covers
- Value: the current First-Class Mail single-piece 1-ounce letter rate—$0.82 as of August 31, 2026.
- Typical use: one eligible rectangular domestic First-Class Mail letter weighing no more than 1 ounce.
- Long-term validity: a genuine unused ordinary Forever stamp bought at an earlier rate still carries the current 1-ounce letter value.
- Combination use: multiple valid stamps and smaller denominations can be combined to meet a higher postage amount.
The required total still depends on the finished mailpiece’s weight, dimensions, thickness, rigidity, shape, destination and service. Use the Forever stamp calculator rather than assuming one stamp covers every mailing.

The shared “Forever” idea is that each stamp follows its named rate category. It does not make all of these stamps interchangeable on a one-for-one basis.
What Forever stamps do not promise
- They do not guarantee that one stamp is enough for every letter.
- They do not automatically cover large envelopes, packages, added services or international mail.
- They do not turn used or canceled postage into reusable postage.
- They do not give every nondenominated stamp the ordinary 1-ounce letter value.
- They do not establish a collectible resale price; postage value and collector value are separate questions.
