What the stamp shows

Artist Charles Chaisson created the digital portrait. Berra appears in the catching gear and pinstripes closely associated with his playing career. Antonio Alcalá directed and designed the stamp, while Michael Doret created the “Yogi Berra” lettering.

Why USPS honored Yogi Berra

USPS records Berra as a three-time American League MVP and 18-time MLB All-Star who played in 14 World Series during 18 seasons in pinstripes. He won a record 10 World Series championships as a player, entered the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1972, and later received the Presidential Medal of Freedom posthumously.

Service beyond baseball

Before his major-league career, Berra served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and took part in the D-Day invasion. His later work as a manager and coach, along with the memorable sayings associated with him, expanded his public identity beyond catching and hitting.

Postage use today

A genuine unused Yogi Berra stamp remains valid for the current one-ounce domestic First-Class Mail letter rate. The portrait and 2021 date do not change the postage class. A heavy, square, rigid, oversized or international piece may require additional or different postage.

Identification and collecting checks

  • The official issue has one design in a pane of 20.
  • Check unused versus canceled condition before treating it as usable postage.
  • Do not confuse the original pane with a first-day cover or later reproduction.
  • Evaluate centering, gum and physical condition separately from postage value.
